DeepSeek believed for 19 seconds before answering the question, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it provided a whopper: DeepSeek thought it was ChatGPT.
This relatively innocuous error could be evidence - a smoking cigarettes gun per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI designs, as has actually been claimed by OpenAI, and that when pushed, it will dive back into that training to speak its fact.
However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it said it was not which it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant created specifically by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."
Okay, sure, however in your rather lengthy action to me, you, DeepSeek, made numerous recommendations to yourself as ChatGPT. I have actually included some screenshots below as evidence:
As you can see, after attempting to recognize if I was talking about Gemini AI or some other Gemini, DeepSeek replies, "If it's about the AI, then the concern is comparing me (which is ChatGPT) to Gemini." Later, garagesale.es it describes "Myself (ChatGPT)."
Why would DeepSeek do that under any scenarios? Is it one of those AI hallucinations we like to discuss? Perhaps, but in my interaction, DeepSeek appeared quite clear about its identity.
I got to this line of inquiry, by the way, because I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The response was shockingly diplomatic, and when I requested a simple yes or no response, it told me, "It's not possible to offer a basic yes or no response. 'Smart' is too complicated an idea to use in that method to language designs. They have different strengths and weak points."

I can't say I disagree. In truth, DeepSeek's answer was quite similar, except it was not always talking about itself.
This does not add up
I believe I've been clear about my DeepSeek skepticism. Everyone states it's the most effective and inexpensively experienced AI ever (everybody except Alibaba), however I do not understand if that's real. To be reasonable, there's a significant amount of detail on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They at least appear to show that DeepSeek did the work.
But I do not believe they reveal how these models were trained. In any case, I do not have evidence that DeepSeek trained its models on OpenAI or anybody else's big language models - or a minimum of I didn't until today.
Who are you?
DeepSeek is increasingly a mystery covered inside a problem. There is some consensus on the reality that DeepSeek showed up more fully formed and in less time than the majority of other models, including Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Claude AI.
Very couple of in the tech neighborhood trust DeepSeek's apps on mobile phones since there is no method to understand if China is looking at all that timely information. On the other hand, the designs DeepSeek has constructed are outstanding, and some, consisting of Microsoft, are currently preparing to include them in their own AI offerings.
When it comes to Microsoft, there is some paradox here. Copilot was built based upon advanced ChatGPT models, however in current months, there have been some concerns about if the deep financial partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI will last into the Agentic and addsub.wiki later on Artificial General Intelligence period.
So what if Microsoft starts using DeepSeek, which is possibly simply another spin-off of its present if not future, buddy OpenAI?
The whole thing seems like a confusing mess - and in the meantime, DeepSeek relatively has an id.
